What is a Moyen Size Poodle?

Unlike many dog breeds – which come in only one size – the American Kennel Club recognizes three distinct Poodle sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. But the Moyen Poodle is of a fourth, medium-sized variety.

In fact, the French word “moyen” actually translates to “medium” in English. In Europe, this size category is more commonly known. In fact, several kennel clubs in Europe do recognize the Moyen Poodle as a separate size. This distinction highlights the differing perspectives on Poodle sizes between Europe and the United States.

When it comes to sizing, the primary difference between Standard Poodles and other Poodle sizes is their physical dimensions. While the Moyen Poodle is slightly smaller than the Standard Poodle, the distinction between the two can be subjective. In the United States, Moyen Poodles may be considered smaller Standard Poodles, while in Europe, the Moyen size is recognized separately. Therefore, it is possible to find larger Standard Poodles in the United States, while dogs marketed as Moyen Poodles are generally smaller.

While the Moyen Poodle is gaining popularity in the United States, it is important to note that it is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. This means that, unlike the Standard Poodle, the Moyen Poodle does not have official recognition from the American Kennel Club as one of the three recognized sizes.

They generally weigh between 20 – 25 lbs and will stand approximately 15 – 20 inches tall.

A litter of Moyen Poodle puppies can be a result of breeding a male and female Moyen Poodle, or by breeding a standard Poodle with a miniature Poodle.

This makes them a medium-sized canine companion!

Personality and Temperament

Did you know?

According to a list titled 2020 Most Popular Dog Breeds Rankings, Poodles ranked #6. They are an extremely popular breed. And no wonder why!

Moyen Poodles embody all the best traits of Poodles. They are loyal dogs that do very well in families, often bonding closely with both adults and children alike.

Their energetic nature makes the Moyen Poodle a great choice for those with active lifestyles. They are playful, smart, and will happily trot alongside you during a hike or splash in the water at the beach.

In addition, Moyen Poodles are watchful dogs. Though rarely aggressive, the Moyen Poodle (like all dogs) requires proper socialization to avoid becoming nervous or timid around strangers. This is especially true for rescues.

Overall, the Moyen Poodle’s temperament makes it a fabulous family pet.

Famous Moyen Poodles

All throughout history, humans have loved dogs. Of course, this includes Poodles!

Elvis Presley famously owned a Poodle named Champagne who he lived with while in Germany.

Walt Disney’s family also adored their pet Poodle, Lady.

Violette de Ayala – founder of femcity and bestselling author – shares her home with a darling Moyen Poodle named Georgie.

Similarly, Anne Devereux-Mills – founder of Parlay House – has a sweet black and white Moyen Poodle who goes by the name of Mick Jagger. He’s even featured on her Instagram page!

Which is best: Moyen or Standard Poodle?

Choosing between a Moyen and a Standard Poodle depends on various factors, including availability in your area and your size preference. If you can find a Moyen locally and you prefer a smaller-sized dog, it might be worth waiting for one. On the other hand, if obtaining a puppy quickly and finding the right characteristics are more important to you than size, you might opt for a Standard Poodle.

While there might be some differences in size, it’s important to note that overall, Moyen and Standard Poodles share many similarities. Therefore, you shouldn’t feel pressured to make the “perfect” choice. If you have already determined that a Poodle is the right breed for your lifestyle, deciding between a Moyen and a Standard Poodle should not be a difficult decision. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and considering what factors are most important to you in selecting your new companion.
