We’ve been trying to think of ways to help the many, many shelters impacted across Texas. The devastation across our state is staggering. By this weekend’s end, Austin Pets Alive alone will have transported over 1,000 homeless animals from animal shelters both along the coast and in Houston to Austin so they can find their forever homes. (Other agencies are helping reunite lost pets with their families, and help evacuees who have pets with them.)
Yesterday we went to Austin Pets Alive and donated money and pet supplies–and we adopted a little evacuee!
As I told you about the other day, we lost our 16-month-old kitten Ochi to cancer on the day that Harvey struck the coast. We weren’t quite sure if we were ready to adopt just yet–but so, so many animals need a home right now and, honestly, we needed to smile again.
We went to the Austin Pets Alive Town Lake shelter looking for a kitten; they were all in foster homes so we went to their satellite shelter in Tarrytown, where we found a three-month-old little girl who is outgoing and happy:
You’d never know that she was evacuated from a flooded coastal community; she is happy, extremely outgoing and adventurous. I’ll be bringing you a complete post on her–(including her name, once we decide on one!) but, first, I wanted to share a special fundraiser that we’re having this Labor Day weekend on PawZaar!
You’ve seen our many articles on Port Aransas, one of our favorite coastal getaways with Irie and Tiki. The town of just over 4,000 residents is one of the most dog-friendly places in the state–but the community was extremely hard hit by Harvey with extensive damage across the island.
Port Aransas is home to a charming city shelter located right by the visitors’ center, positioned perfectly to greet everyone when arriving via ferry. In advance of the storm, the shelter was able to safely place all their animals with rescues in San Antonio and with Austin Pets Alive to find forever homes. Now the shelter, damaged by the storm, will be used to help lost and injured pets that remain on the island.
We want to help. Through Labor Day, 2017, 100 percent of the proceeds from every PawZaar sale will go to help the City of Port Aransas Animal Shelter! Let’s help this small town get back on its paws once again!
