Is Your Favorite La Quinta Now Charging a Pet Fee?

For years, we’ve always chosen La Quinta when we travel thanks to the policy they had in place that two pets of any size stayed free. The simplicity of the pet policy made the choice very easy for us; we didn’t have to call specific properties to ask for their location’s policies and fees.

Along with pleasure trips, we have always opted for La Quinta when we head to South Texas to visit John’s relatives in the nursing home. Barli made his first La Quinta stay just a few weeks after we adopted him; our stay–without a bark, potty accident, or scratch anywhere in the room–really showed us how much fun this boy would be to travel with.

When Hurricane Harvey came barreling toward central Texas in 2017, we evacuated and headed to our local La Quinta in case our creek became impassable and flooded our home. The welcoming policy and lack of a pet fee made it an easy choice.

Well, unfortunately things have changed now that La Quinta has been acquired by Wyndham.

La Quinta Pet Fee

La Quinta’s pet policy now states that a pet fee may be charged:

  • A current contact number must be left with the front desk and an optional pet fee may be charged at check in ($20 per night for maximum of $40 per stay per room). Authorized service animals are not subject to a pet fee.

Certainly a $20 pet fee isn’t steep in comparison to many properties–but it is an additional expenditure.

Because our stays are frequently at properties we might not pick for pleasure trips because the trip is solely to make a nursing home visit–and since we are self-employed and watching our budget–it is enough to make us think twice.

The uncertainty of whether or not a specific property has a fee also further complicates our trip planning.

Each of the La Quinta property listings I’ve checked in towns near the nursing home simply has this statement:

This hotel may charge $20 per room per night for pets with a maximum charge per stay of $40 applied to the guest folio. Guests are also required to sign a pet acknowledgement at check-in. This hotel offers a limited number of pet-free rooms for guests with allergies or otherwise. For both pet-friendly rooms and pet-free rooms, please contact the hotel directly to confirm room availability and any fees prior to arrival.

La Quinta Pet Policy: Weight Restrictions

But wait–or should I say weight–there’s more…

La Quinta now states that select locations have weight restrictions, definitely a potential issue for us since Tiki weighs over 60 pounds. The pet policy page does not specify what those weight restrictions are, and it doesn’t specify which properties have a weight restriction:

Select locations may have a pet weight limit. Please confirm by calling the hotel at the time of booking.

La Quinta also has a list of properties that do not permit pets:

Now What?

We’ll soon be planning another trip to the nursing home. We were already looking at La Quinta properties in Victoria and Port Lavaca–but I know we’ll now also be looking at other pet-friendly hotel brands such as Motel 6, which does permit two dogs of any size with no pet fee. (Red Roof also does not charge a pet fee but has an official limit of one pet per room.)

Aloft and Kimpton don’t charge a pet fee–but neither chain has properties in the area we need to visit.

Which hotel chain do you prefer when traveling with your dogs?
