Whew, summer has arrived! With afternoon temperatures already hovering about 100 degrees on most days (with humidity levels making it feel 10 degrees hotter), summer has come to Texas.
Summer is definitely the season of swimming and outdoor fun for Tiki and Barli, with trips to the lake and the beach–but it’s also the season of shedding! I’m not about to let a little loose fur slow down our plans, though!
What are YOUR summer travel plans with your dogs this summer?
I’m inspired by this video about three traveling dachshunds who set out to visit every national park that welcomes four-legged travelers:
Our plans are a little less ambitious but we’re looking forward to packing in a lot of summer fun for the dogs including:
- a trip to Port Aransas for a few days of beach fun
- monthly trips to the South Texas nursing home where John’s relatives reside
- a day trip to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
- a day trip to Inks Lake State Park
- numerous afternoon trips to Lake Travis and Lake Georgetown
- weekly patio restaurant outings
- shopping activities with Barli to continue working on his public access skills before he takes his nursing home therapy dog test
Kicking Off Our Summer Travel
Just this week we headed to the nursing home for a visit with John’s relatives. It’s over a three-hour car ride from our house to the nursing home, but we always make a stop at at least one park on the way down so the dogs can stretch their legs. This trip, Barli and Tiki had the chance to visit Ms. Pearl, the world’s largest squirrel statue!
By the time we reach the nursing home, the dogs are always excited to visit their cousins then they’re ready to settle down for a nap.
Tiki likes the coolness of the tile floor…but Barli thinks the safety mat by the bed of John’s bedridden cousin is actually a dog bed and chooses it for his nap.
Of course, when the dogs get up from that nap, they leave some fur behind. I reached for Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pad Refills from my bag…and, voila, the fur was gone.
When we’re home, I use our Swiffer Sweeper Pet Dry + Wet Sweeping Kit to sweep up the fur–but when we’re traveling, I pack some Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pad Refills in my bag for quick cleanups.
With their surface of grooves and ridges, they’re perfect for picking up pet hair and dirt on our visits–and hotel stays– (and can be dampened to clean up muddy paw prints, too). With 86 pads in each box, they’re an economical choice for home AND pet travel this summer.
Whether we’re at the nursing home, a hotel or a dog-friendly store–or visiting relatives–I know that the best way to ensure that locations remain dog-friendly is to travel with well-mannered dogs–and leave no trace.
While dog travelers are well trained to pick up poop, many don’t consider picking up fur–but it’s quick and easy to do.
After the car trip, Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pad Refills are also a great option for wiping down the car interior to pick up that fur and dust.
Just in time for summer shedding, Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pad Refills are available for a great price at Sam’s Club, making them extra economical!
Visit Sam’s Club and samsclub.com to stock up on Swiffer Sweeper Dry Pad Refills and keep your house clean and pet mess-free this summer.
