Ask Alecia: My Doxie Has Potty Accidents!

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to get a handle on some of the training issues in your house? We’ve got a special full week of reader questions to Alecia Evans, our Ask the Trainer expert!

I have a 6-month-old miniature Dachshund that I have been diligently potty training since I got him at 8 weeks old. Shouldn’t he have already gotten the hang of going outside by now?? He does pretty good most of the time, but he still has accidents on occasion. We do have a doggy door that he has access to at all times of the day and night.

Dear Lisa,

OH BOY can I relate.  I, too, have a dachshund.  If yours is 6 months, figure on it ending anywhere from 7-8 months.

Stay diligent and clear about where the bathroom is without getting angry but just know that dachsies can sometimes take a little longer than most but once they get it, unless its an emergency or they are not feeling well, they will never mess in the house again. Paws Up! Alecia
