Dealing with Dog Anxiety

Dog anxiety is something we face in our household often, especially during spring’s frequent thunderstorms. Our Irie has a lot of anxiety that begins before we ever hear the first rumble of thunder. Today we have a special guest post from Thundershirt UK with tips about dealing with your dog’s anxiety.

How to Deal with Dog Anxiety, the Natural Way

We have all known of a four-legged friend that freaks out in a thunderstorm, or cannot settle when there is a guest in the house.

While a vet may prescribe a course of tablets, there are natural solutions available, some of which are easier to use than getting your pet to take a pill.

Firstly it is important to try to identify the source of stress. If a particular situation or event seems to trigger anxiety, then it might be worth considering if this could be avoided. For example if your dog gets stressed and anxious when left home alone, is there someone he can be left with when you go out?

When the situation is not one which can be altered, then you have a range of options to consider. Herbal and aromatherapy remedies have been found to be successful on dogs, as have homeopathy treatments. Consult an expert in this field to see which remedies they would recommend for your dog.

Tellington T-Touch is a practice of therapeutic massage which has been found to be effective in helping animals to relax and adapt to new situations. This can be learned and used on your pet as required.

Another option is the Thundershirt. This is a tight fitting piece of doggy-clothing which, due to the even, gentle pressure it produces has been found to be effective in helping dogs which suffer from anxiety. It is similar in principle to the ‘swaddling’ of babies, where they are wrapped in blankets which help them to feel safe and secure – almost like a constant hug.
