Measuring Your Dog for a Collar

dog-collarMeasuring your dog for a collar isn’t as simple as it might seem. Have you ever measured your dog and bought a new collar, only to find out that it’s too small?

Today we’ve got a guest post from Victoria over at Bling Bling Puppy to help you measure for that next collar!

If you are shopping for a new collar for your puppy or dog, there are a couple of handy tips that should help save you some frustration and wasted time. The first thing that you are going to want to do is get a fabric measuring tape. The next step is to measure your dog’s neck. The best procedure for this is to wrap the measuring tape comfortably around the base of your dog’s neck.

It is important to leave two fingers’ width between the tape and your dog’s neck. If you don’t, you run the risk of getting a collar that will be way too tight for your dog to wear. Many times the manufacturer of the collar will have the corresponding number of the collar to the size in inches of your dog’s neck. However this isn’t always exact. Even though there are sizing holes in dog collars, you still want to be careful to measure.

There are two ways to shop for a dog collar and best practices for getting a good fit.

  1. Shop at your local pet store. If you drive to the pet store, bring the fabric measuring tape with you and the measurements of your dog’s neck to measure the collar you want to make sure you have a perfect fit.
  2. You can shop online. If you do shop online for a dog collar, make sure that you look carefully at the measurements on their collars. If they have shoddy measurements or don’t have any at all, skip and move to another site.

Hopefully this helps in your quest to find a comfortable yet chic new collar for your canine friend.
