Fans of sports and Spots are invited to give a cheer for freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy’s silver medal win at the 2014 winter Olympic games and for the Fidos from Sochi who won a place in the hearts of the world’s dog devotees as the citizens of Telluride welcome three dogs who have traveled more than 6,000 miles for the chance to make the Colorado community their forever home.
Taking place on March 21, 2014, the canine-centric festivities will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with a parade that starts in Town Park and follows Colorado Avenue (Main Street) to the county courthouse, where the mayors of Telluride and Mountain Valley will speak and make a special dedication in honor of the athlete. After waving to the sports star and his tail-wagging chums (Mama, Jake and Rosa) along the parade route, fans can get the compassionate Olympic competitor’s autograph during a street celebration that will include music, hot chocolate and much more.
“Although Telluride has many individuals who excel, rarely have we had an individual like Gus, who has achieved so much at such a young age,” Telluride Mayor Stu Fraser said about the city’s native son, who used his star wattage during the winter games to shine a spotlight on the plight of street dogs who were in danger of losing their lives due to an overpopulation of strays near the Sochi Olympic venues, and saved the lives of a mother dog and her pups in the process. “Gus is not only an Olympic silver medal winner, in a brand new sport, but also an individual who is so representative of the heart of our community on the national stage.”
“The whole community is excited and proud to recognize Gus, not only for his Olympic accomplishments, but for his overall athletic achievements and character while representing Telluride,” said Mountain Village Mayor Dan Jansen.
