She’s starred as an elevator operator in the classic Billy Wilder-directed comedy The Apartment, a widowed mother in the Academy Award-winning Terms of Endearment and a throughly modern American on the hit series Downton Abbey, and now actress Shirley MacLaine has taken on the real life role of a devoted pet parent to a dog in need.
Adopted by the star from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, a tiny Jack Russell Terrier dubbed Trixie Harmony might just want to belt out the lyrics to “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” a tune made famous my her new human in the movie Sweet Charity: “If they could see me now/That little gang of mine/I’m eating fancy chow…” The fortunate Fido is currently enjoying her first few weeks with her new family, which includes barking buddies Buddy Bub and Terry (a dog who lapped up the limelight in 2003 with the release of Ms. MacLaine’s tome, Out on a Leash: Exploring the Nature of Reality and Love.)
A New Mexico resident, the actress has previously donated autographed items from her personal wardrobe to the non-profit organization’s resale shop to raise funds for the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, which provides comfort and care to approximately 10,000 homeless companion animals each year.
