OK, fellow dog moms and dads: let’s talk about allergies. You already know the struggle: shedding fur, allergens, dust and hidden dirt can quickly turn your home into a cleaning battlefield.
I’ve just learned about a new vacuum that’s really different from the typical pet vacuums (of which we have several). The Jimmy Anti-Mite Vacuum Cleaner BX7 Pro is a handheld vacuum designed to tackle allergens and pet dander in fabrics, combining powerful suction with UV light to effectively remove mites, dust, and allergens from furniture and bedding.
And, yes, even if you vacuum regularly and get that fur up, the dander and mites are still down in the upholstery in your home, from your mattress and couch to your dog’s favorite bed.
What are Dust Mites?
Dust mites are microscopic creatures that thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on dead skin cells shed by humans and animals. (I know…gross…)
Dust mites are found in all homes but in pet households the presence of fur, dander, and increased humidity from activities like bathing, dog drool and outdoor play creates the perfect breeding ground for these tiny pests.
Dust mites commonly inhabit pet beds, upholstery, carpets, pillows and even mattresses, leading to allergens that can trigger respiratory issues, skin irritation, and allergies in both humans and pets.
What Makes the Jimmy BX7 Pro Different?
As I mentioned, this is a hand-held vacuum and, like other hand-held vacuums, it sucks up dirt and pet hair easily from upholstery.
But that’s where the similarities end. This little vacuum uses UV sterilization to combat pet allergens. The BX7 Pro’s UV-C light sterilizes surfaces, eliminating up to 99.99% of bacteria and mites, creating a healthier environment for you and your dog.
The vacuum also uses vibrations with high-frequency tapping to loosen mites, dust and dander that’s embedded deep in fabrics.
And ultrasound destroys the nerves of the mites as the unit heats to 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) to kill the mites themselves. Like hanging sheets and duvets out on a clothesline, the heat gives your mattress, pillows and upholstery a little sunbath that would otherwise be inconvenient or, in some cases, impossible.
That all sounded great–so I decided to put it to the test. I had some questions:
- Would the ultrasound be disturbing to dogs’ sensitive ears?
- Is the vacuum loud?
- Is it able to tackle all the dirt I know our house’s fabrics can throw at it? This demands a large capacity dustbin.
- How heavy is this? Vacuuming upholstery can mean holding a unit up to vacuum the back of the couch.
There was only one way to know. It was time to put it to the test!
Let’s Try it Out!
One thing that stood out to me immediately is the width of the intake port. The suction port is over 9.5 inches wide–so much broader than a traditional handheld vac. A wider port means faster vacuuming!
Another feature I noticed was the LED detection system. It calculates the number of dust mites in the fabric and will show red (dirty) or blue (clean).
Partially red and blue means keep cleaning until the bar turns blue.
This indicator light is one of my favorite features. It lets me know when I need to keep vacuuming and when it’s time to move on.
You can use the vacuum in any of three modes:
- Vacuum + UV
- Vacuum + Tap
- Vacuum + Tap + UV
The indicator light makes it easy to see which setting you’re on.
And as for my questions?
Was the ultrasound disturbing to dogs’ sensitive ears? The dogs didn’t pay any more attention to the Jimmy BX7 Pro than they do to any of our other vacuum cleaners.
Was the vacuum loud? The vacuum operates at 78 dB(A) which is about equivalent to a hair dryer. It’s not super quiet–but it didn’t make me want to reach for earplugs either. The loudest settings are the ones with Tap turned on.
Was the dustbin able to hold a large capacity? Yes! The cup can hold half a liter of dust. It’s clear so it’s easy to see when it’s time to empty. The dustbin is washable. I was shocked by the fine, fine dust the dustbin contained when I emptied it! I had already vacuumed the dog bed for the day–so this was EXTRA dust and mites that my regular vacuum had not picked up.
Was it heavy? The unit weighs just over 8 pounds; I didn’t have any problems using it on our upholstery including the backs of the couch and chairs. It was very easy to pull along flat surfaces like the dog beds, mattress and couch cushions.
What Did I Think?
I give the Jimmy Anti-Mite Vacuum Cleaner BX7 Pro a big paws up–it really is a must-have for dog parents, especially if anyone in your household has allergies.
While it is not designed to replace your standard vacuum for floor cleaning, it’s perfect for your bed, dog beds, couches, car interiors, and anywhere else your pup loves to lounge!
Pros for Pet Parents
- Removes stubborn fur, dust mites and dander from pet beds and furniture
- UV and heat technology eliminates allergens and odors
- HEPA filtration ensures cleaner air
- Easy to maneuver
- Spacious dustbin
Cons for Pet Parents
- Not designed for cleaning hard floors. This is a very specialized vacuum. The BX7 Pro focuses on fabric surfaces, so you’ll still need another vacuum for floors.
- Corded design limits flexibility. I didn’t have a problem with the cord (it is over 16 feet long) but know that you will need to use it while plugged in. The Jimmy BX7 is exclusively cord powered because of its large motor and suction. (Jimmy does make a cordless model, the JIMMY BD7 Pro Cordless.)
