Would you like to create some easy–and healthy–training treats for your dog? Chicken liver is a canine favorite (and it’s inexpensive), perfect for creating high value treats for training and for day trips with your dog. Our chicken liver dog treat recipe is easy and fast–and your dog will love you for it!
I was going to call this recipe something cute like “Which Came First? The Chicken Liver or the Egg?” but decided that might be pushing the envelope…or the shell…
This recipe is super easy to make and VERY popular with our pooches!
With a simple list of ingredients–just chicken, chicken liver, and eggs–this recipe takes only a few minutes to prepare.
The finished treats break up easily into training treats, and they’re very inexpensive to make. Right now, a pound of chicken liver is just over $1 at our local grocery store; I used chicken breast because I had it on hand but you could substitute and chicken (or turkey) meat you might have in your refrigerator or freezer.
This recipe literally took minutes to prepare although you’ll bake it for almost two hours.
I used parchment paper on my cookie sheets so cleanup was super simple.
The recipe isn’t pretty in preparation…or as it cooks. Here’s a look at the treats about halfway through baking…
Halfway through baking, you’ll cut the treats into squares so all sides will cook.
It just doesn’t get much easier than this!
Your work will be well-appreciated, too…our dogs just LOVED these treats!
Chicken Liver Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 pound chicken livers
- 1 pound chicken
- 3 eggs
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 220 degrees.
- Put parchment paper on two cookie sheets or, if you don't have parchment paper on hand, lightly grease cookie sheets.
- Add chicken and eggs to blender or food processor and chop then mix.
- Add chicken livers to mixture, pouring entire container of livers, juices and all, into mixture. Mix until you have a malt-like consistency.
- Pour the mixture in the center of the two cookie sheets then bake.
- After one hour, cut each mixture into one-inch squares and flip so that all sides of the treats will brown. Bake for one more hour.
- When treats are browned, turn off the oven but leave the cookie sheets in the heated oven to cool for several hours.
- Cool treats completely before serving or refrigerating. Break treats into smaller bits for training treats.
- Refrigerate or freeze all treats; they'll last about one week in the refrigerator.
