Teeth Cleaning with Purbreath® No Brush Oral Care

tiki-innovet

Both Irie and Tiki have had dental problems in the past, ones that resulted in both cleanings and extractions. For the first few years of their lives, we relied on raw marrow bones to clean their teeth naturally; unfortunately these power chewers liked the marrow bones TOO much, resulting in splintered teeth–and, now, vacant gaps in their toothy grins.

Since we can no longer rely on marrow bones to clean their teeth–and since neither will sit still for a brushing with a toothbrush–we’re always on the lookout for a natural way to clean their teeth that’s easy for us and pleasant for them. We’ve found an option now in Purbreath® No Brush Oral Care, an all-natural, made in the USA teeth cleaning gel from Innovet Pet Products.

Purbreath is an oral care gel formulated to remove plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth. The ingredients, when mixed with your pet’s saliva, will kill harmful bacteria and–an extra bonus!–freshen your dog’s breath. It will also break and loosen plaque and tartar to whiten teeth, all without brushing.

For the next two weeks, we’re going to be using Purbreath on Irie’s back molars, ones that are opposite the molars that were pulled due to fracture (from too much bone chewing!) Unfortunately now that there’s only one tooth in that back portion of her mouth, it has been extra hard to keep the remaining molar clean.

So we’re giving Purbreath a try and we’ll update you on Irie’s progress removing some of the plaque that has built up since her last cleaning (when the extractions took place two years ago). We’re trying out the Peppermint flavor Purbreath.

Before I tried it on Irie, I tried some in my mouth to make sure it didn’t burn–and it doesn’t at all. It was much like a breath freshener but without the burn that many can cause. The taste was fresh and mild.

The product’s use is super simple: pump the gel directly onto your dog’s gums or onto your finger, rubbing it onto your dog’s gums where his saliva will spread the product across his teeth. If your dog has plaque buildup, give the product a few minutes then wipe the teeth with a cloth. For Irie’s size, the dosage is 4-6 pumps and I’ll apply two to three times a week. I think naptime might be a good option because dogs shouldn’t eat or drink a half hour before or after application.

It was super easy to give Irie PurBreath and she didn’t mind a bit. Stay tuned as I follow her progress over the next several weeks!
