The Dogs of Proud Spirit Review

Every once in a while, you read a story that restores your faith in human nature. The Dogs of Proud Spirit is such a book. Author Melanie Sue Bowles and her husband, Jim, operate the Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary which for 20 years has sheltered and rehabilitated abused and abandoned horses.

Bowles told the remarkable story of Proud Spirit sanctuary in The Horses of Proud Spirit, published in 2003, to widespread acclaim.

Now comes a companion book as the author describes the equally moving story of the many dogs they have rescued and adopted into their family along the way.

The couple, firefighters by trade, never intended to have a dog component on their ranch; they were focused solely on their horse rescues.

Then, along came Molly, a lanky Catahoula Leopard dog who wanders into the fire station and into Jim’s pickup.

Melanie resists at first, but the engaging stray soon makes herself at home and becomes a beloved member of their family. A procession of other stray dogs followed; some were adopted out, most found their forever home at Proud Spirit.

Their stories are unique and well-told and will dwell in your memory long after you finish the book. Bowles is not only a kind-hearted and generous animal advocate; she is a very talented writer as well.

The Dogs of Proud Spirit is a beautiful book, brimming with laughter and tears and with the sheer exuberance of sharing one’s life with animals.

Thank you, Melanie and Jim for sharing your stories and reminding us how much our dogs enrich our lives.
