The countdown is on for the Fourth of July and all that it includes, from family fun to firework fears. We wanted to share some of our previous Fourth of July articles with everyone and also to pass along some helpful tips from PetSmart to help keep your dog safe during this holiday when many dogs are lost due to their fear of fireworks. Here are some great tips from PetSmart to make the holiday more fun for you and your pet:
- If your pet fears loud noises, consider a Thundershirt to calm their nerves during the fireworks display. With a success rate of more than 80%, this special shirt delivers constant, gentle pressure to create a dramatic calming effect.
- To protect your dog’s security and peace of mind, leave him at home during the festivities. Close all of the windows, blinds, and curtains. Leave the fan running at normal level to provide a little white noise.
- If you must leave your pet outside, provide shelter for them in a garage or basement with a comfortable blanket and a supply of fresh water. Any pet who is frightened by normal thunderstorms should not be left alone during fireworks displays. Consider hiring a pet sitter or asking a family friend to stay with them.
- Distract your dog from the firework booms with a KONG Toy – these toys have a hollow center to stuff with tasty treats that require skill and persistence to get to.
