If there’s a better combo than peanut butter and jelly then it has to be peanut butter and pooches. Dogs of all ages just love the taste of peanut butter. This easy peanut butter dog treats recipe is quick to make, it will make your house smell great as the treats bake, and it’s easy on the budget. That’s something to wag about!
What You’ll Need to Make These Treats
This homemade dog treat recipe includes your favorite flour, peanut butter, shredded carrots, bran cereal, olive oil and blackstrap molasses.
You can use creamy or crunchy peanut butter (I would have selected crunchy if I’d had it in the pantry but I only had creamy.) If you have organic peanut butter, that’s tops!
NOTE: Be sure to check the ingredients list on the peanut butter. A few manufacturers now add Xylitol to their peanut butter; this is VERY toxic to dogs. Never use any peanut butter–or anything else–that lists Xylitol or birch sugar as an ingredient.
Let’s Make Some Peanut Butter Dog Treats!
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a cookie sheet and set it aside–or line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Mix the dry ingredients then add the wet ingredients, adding the water a little at a time.
The amount of water you’ll need will vary based on the moisture in the peanut butter.
I started with a 1/2 cup of water then added a few more teaspoons to make the dough just the right consistency:
Work the dough on a lightly floured surface (if the dough’s too sticky, sprinkle with more flour…if it’s too dry, add just a little water.)
Roll out the dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness then it’s time to cut with a cookie cutter.
I like to use a small dog bone cutter (I like small dog treats) but any shape will do.
If you don’t have a cookie cutter on hand, just flip over a small glass and use that or use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into strips and squares.
Tip: if you’re having trouble getting the dough to pop out of the cookie cutter (and this is thick, sticky dough), just dip the cookie cutter in flour.
After you cut out all the treats you can squeeze out of the dough, bring together the scraps, knead the dough a little, roll it out again, and continue cutting until you’ve used up all the dough.
You’ll put the treats on a greased cookie sheet:
Pop the cookie sheet in the preheated oven:
After baking the treats until browned on both sides, remove the cookie sheet from the oven, set it out and let it cool completely; this will make the treats crisper. You’re then ready to serve!
Peanut Butter and Carrot Dog Treats
This recipe—which will fill your kitchen with the scent of fresh-baked cookies—is one of our dogs’ favorites. If you want to decorate the treats by icing for a special event, puree the carrots for a smoother texture.
Ingredients
- 1 cup peanut butter
- 2 cups oat flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup multigrain cereal or bran flakes, crushed (do NOT use cereals with raisins)
- 1/2 cup shredded carrots
- 1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
- Grease a cookie sheet and set it aside.
- Mix dry ingredients then add wet ingredients, adding the water a little at a time.
- Work the dough on a lightly floured surface.
- Roll dough to about a 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut dough with cookie cutter.
- Add treats to cookie sheet; bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- After baking the bones until browned on both sides, remove the dog bones from the oven, set them out and let them cool completely; this will make them crisper.
Notes
Never include cereals with raisins in dog treat recipes. Raisins (and grapes) are toxic to most dogs and can result in acute renal failure. Raisin toxicity can develop within just hours of ingesting.
