Sports fans cheered as he soared through the air to a silver medal win on the slopes in Sochi, and now animal lovers are applauding freeskier Gus Kenworthy’s heart of gold.
The animal-loving athlete who helped to introduce millions of television viewers to slope style skiing in the sport’s Olympic debut is now using his star wattage to shine a spotlight on dogs who are in danger of losing their lives due to the overpopulation of strays near Olympic venues.
The sports star is currently making arrangements to bring back to the U.S. a litter of four pups and their mother, who was found caring for her babies beneath a security tent near the entrance to the Gorki Media Center in the village of Rosa Khutor. (USA Today reports that differing requirements for adult dogs may prove to be an obstacle to the mother dog’s flight to a better life.)
Explaining his efforts to his fans, Kenworthy stated:
Also, for the people wondering, I’ve lined up kennels 4 the pups & made vaccination appointments. Doing all I can to bring them home w/ me!

If all goes according to plan, two of the tiny fur babies will become part of the Kenworthy clan, with one to be adopted by the athlete’s brother and another to be the barking buddy of the hot-dogging skier.
