Miley Cyrus Adopts from The Beagle Freedom Project

Barbie, a dog who was once confined to a laboratory cage, recently celebrated America’s independence and her own personal freedom alongside Miley Cyrus, her new, high-profile pet parent thanks to The Beagle Freedom Project.

Barbie is currently enjoying her first days with her new four-legged siblings, among them Milky the Pit Bull from the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation and Bean and Happy, a Chihuahua mix and a Rottweiler/Beagle from Saving SPOT! Rescue.

Sharing the happy news via social media, the “Wrecking Ball” singer wrote on Instagram:

Happy to introduce the newest member of my family Barbie @beaglefreedom #stopannimaltesting #donttestonbeagles.

Barbie is just one of the many dogs who have received a new lease on life thanks to The Beagle Freedom Project, which works with laboratories to find forever homes for healthy, adoptable beagles who have been used for research. The project is a service of the non-profit Animal Rescue, Media and Education (ARME).

“There are nearly 70,000 dogs in U.S. labs right now and 96% of them are beagles, the breed of choice because they are so gentle, docile, and forgiving,” Shannon Keith, the President and Founder of Beagle Freedom Project has stated in a recent press release regarding the June 2016 release of beagles from a testing facility. “This outdated research practice only survives because it remains hidden from the public.”

Miley Cyrus is far from the only famous friend of Fidos to show support for the work of Beagle Freedom Project. Using their star wattage to shine a spotlight on the paws cause, in 2013 actor Corey Feldman (The Goonies, The Lost Boys) and former Baywatch star Alexandra Paul helped the organization celebrate the emancipation of 10 beagles who had spent their lives in a research lab, just as Chelsea Handler, Whitney Cummings, Maria Menounos and Ross McCall did in 2015 during Operation April as five beagles who spent six years in a South Korean lab landed in the states to start a new life.

Twilight star Nikki Reed also helped to bring about the dawn of a new day for laboratory research animals when she joined Beagle Freedom Project at the State Capitol of Sacramento, California in 2015 to state their case for Assembly Bill 147. Known as The Beagle Freedom Bill, it would allow companion animals in laboratories the opportunity to live out the rest of their lives with a forever family once testing is complete.
