For the past 76 years fans of Fidos have cheered as Lassie saved the day in books, on the big screen and on TV, and now the compassionate collie has been cast in the real life role of an ambassador for Save the Children’s Get Ready Get Safe initiative.
One year after an EF5 tornado tore through the heart of Moore, Oklahoma, Lassie will visit the town’s child care centers which Save the Children helped to reopen after the catastrophe, and meet some of the centers’ staff and brave little ones who survived the destruction by following emergency procedures.
The celebrated Spot will also help children learn about advance emergency strategies with Get Ready Get Safe “prep rally” activities held at Moore elementary schools.
Lassie’s role as an animal ambassador for Save the Children’s Get Ready Get Safe initiative will promote the renowned charity’s continuing efforts to protect children in times of crisis by providing emergency training and access to resources in order to have a plan in place before a disaster strikes.
“We’re thrilled that Lassie is joining the team. Who better to show children that emergency preparedness can help them feel safe, not scared?” said Kathy Spangler, Save the Children’s vice president for U.S. programs. “We’re excited for Lassie to offer comfort when disaster strikes and to help inspire the basic protections our nation’s children still desperately need.”
