Our dogs love to chew. Unfortunately, they love to chew so much that it cost Irie three of her molars and Tiki two, thanks to chewing marrow bones in their adolescent years, cracking the teeth the process.
But even with fewer teeth, Irie and Tiki still love a good chew–but we are extra cautious about just what they chomp down on during those chewing sessions. I love to give them bully sticks but both girls are watching their weight so we needed a way to extend the fun of a slim bully stick without the extra calories.
We found the answer: the Qwizl by West Paw Design. This innovative chew toy challenges your dog with chewing fun while safeguarding your dog’s teeth. Made in the USA, this colorful chew toy (which means it’s easy to find, whether Irie decides to hide hers in the couch cushions or in the far corners of the yard) is latex-free, BPA- and phthalate-free, FDA compliant (so it’s safe for your dog to eat out of), and it’s guaranteed to last.
As beginners to the Qwizl, I filled Irie and Tiki’s interactive toys with easy-to-remove treats and kibble. I used a semi-soft treat to “plug” the end of the Qwizl, then dropped in small kibble. I then used a second semi-soft treat to top off the Qwizl…then I stood back and watched…
Irie quickly took her Qwizl and started sniffing the side slots, licking the kibble inside to soften it and dislodge the goodies.
Tiki sniffed the end openings, went to work on the center openings and quickly ate the kibble, then went back to working on the ends to get the semi-moist treats.
Now that they’re acquainted with how the Qwizl works, we can up the difficulty bar–using bully sticks, dental sticks, or some of their favorites like cheese and bits of pineapple.
The opportunities for using Qwizl include:
- keeping Irie and Tiki occupied when I’m tied up on a phone interview
- distracting Irie when a thunderstorm approaches
- keeping Irie and Tiki occupied in a hotel or strange surrounding when their stress level increases
If you have a dog whose mobility needs to be limited for a time, be sure to consider a Qwizl. When Irie underwent tpLO surgery to reconstruct her knee and walks had to be limited to just five minutes at first, we looked for ways to keep her happy and occupied–without packing on the calories during that reduced-activity period. Interactive toys like Qwizl are a great way for your dog to burn off that stress and boredom without worsening mobility problems by gaining weight during their recovery.
A big paws up for this USA-made interactive toy that Irie and Tiki just love!
