Homeless Houston Dogs Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving dinner may now just be a memory, but along with heaping helpings of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes this long holiday weekend also offers animal lovers sustenance for the soul thanks to the news that homeless dogs and cats in Houston enjoyed a taste of the good life with a Thanksgiving meal.

Staff at Rover Oaks Pet Resort locations in Houston and Katy, Texas spent days roasting turkeys for adoptables at Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), a non-profit which has been rescuing and rehoming companion animals in need since 1972. The Rover Oaks Katy tradition of a Turkey Day celebration for dogs and cats, which began in 2007 with pet resort co-founders Joy Lee and Steve Smith providing Thanksgiving meals to companion animals temporarily in their care, expanded in 2010 to bringing a bit of home to homeless animals at CAP during the holiday season.

The company’s seasonal mission holds a lot of meaning for Lee, who has been a long-time volunteer with the organization. “When you see the loving care that our clients give their pet companions each day, it breaks your heart to know that thousands of wonderful shelter pets won’t enjoy that same happiness this Thanksgiving. We wanted to do something special for the pets at CAP and give them a holiday treat, too.”

Making any time the most wonderful time of the year for our pals with paws, since its start in 2006 Rover Oaks Katy (which offers doggie daycare, lodging, pet grooming and professional training to its canine clients) has aided CAP’s efforts to find pet parents for hundreds of dogs. Many of the pups have also been pampered by staff at the pet resort with full makeovers, and in some cases have even received training to help them make the transition from shelter life to life in a forever home. Co-owner Steve Smith states: “We strongly encourage everyone to visit the animals at CAP and consider adoption, volunteering or donating to this great organization.”
