Cookie cutters: they’re not just for cookies anymore! We have a lot of cookie cutters in our home and were looking for a fun way to incorporate them in our holiday decorating.
I ran across a Martha Stewart tutorial about making ornaments from cookie cutters and thought I’d give it a try.
It was quick and easy, a great way to enjoy some of our favorite pet photos on the tree!
Step One: Select a photo and a cutter
I had some leftover postcards I’d handed out at a conference a few years ago and decided this photo would work great. The size and layout of the photo will depend on your cookie cutter. I used a 3.5″ Head Dog cutter.
Once I decided on the positioning, I traced around the outside of the cutter, with the sharp side of the cutter down against the paper.
Step Two: Cut out the photo
The next time I do this, I’m going to cut slightly on the outside of the line to make gluing easier.
Step Three: Cut out the backing
For the backing of your ornament, you can use gift wrapping paper or, as I did, an old Christmas card. The heavy paper made the perfect backing.
Be sure to flip your cookie cutter over so the sharp side of the cutter is now facing up. (Alternatively, you could use the photo you just cut out as a template, laying it face down as you trace around it.)
Step Four: Attach a Hanger
I used about a foot-long piece of curling ribbon, taped to the inside of the backing, to create a hanger.
You can also loop the curling ribbon around the ornament itself, as we did on our CatTipper ornament.
Step Five: Glue the Backing and the Photo
I used a glue stick to attach the photo and the backing.
Step Six: Glue the Cutter to the Photo
Again using the glue stick, I ran a thin line of glue around the edge of the cutter before pressing it onto the face of the photo. (If you have a hot glue gun, that would work as well.)
Once attached, smooth out the extra glue.
Allow it to try at least two hours before hanging and enjoying your new ornament!
