Dog Products: What To Buy in January

The new year always brings a new focus on finances. Maybe it’s because we know we’ll have to have a close look at what we spent last year as we sit down to do taxes. Maybe it’s just the overall spirit of improving in the new year.

But saving on dog supplies can take place year around if you watch the sales and buy seasonal products. Every month, DogTipper is going to look the best pet-related items to purchase that month in terms of saving money, either because they’re often discounted that month or because they’re seasonal.

Let’s kick off this series with a look at the best dog supplies to buy in January:

  • Dog Training: January is National Train Your Dog Month so look for specials on everything from dog training classes to equipment like harnesses and leashes.
  • Holiday toys and treats: Those Santa squeaker toys and tree-shaped dog biscuits were hot sellers in December but they’re deeply discounted now. Stock up on reindeer rope tug toys; your dog won’t mind a bit when you pull out one in July. And those candy cane-shaped chews will be happily received any time of the year.
  • Dog sweaters: Again, these were filling the shelves in December but stores are trying to move them out now, especially ones with holiday themes. Your dog won’t care if his sweater features a Christmas wreath or a snowman!
  • Organizational items: January always has everyone in an organizing frenzy and stores feature their lowest prices of the year on plastic storage boxes. We buy them as litter boxes for our cats; they also make great toy boxes for dog toys.
