Birthdays may traditionally be a time to receive presents, but when social media sensation Tuna of Tuna Melts My Heart fame celebrated his special day he gave the gift of a brighter tomorrow to homeless dogs and cats.

The Chiweenie who has charmed one million Instagram followers marked his 4th birthday at Best Friends Animal Society’s NKLA Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles, with the facility’s resident Fidos and felines receiving approximately $2,000 worth of pet food, toys, blankets and pet apparel donated by Tuna’s party guests.

Following in the footsteps of other famous friends of four-leggers like actress Denise Richards, Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba and Nils Lofgren of The E Street Band, Tuna and his pet parent Courtney Dasher recently posed for an “I Saved My Best Friend’ ad for Best Friends Animal Society’s “Save Them All” campaign. Unleashed during Tuna’s birthday bash, the ad will help to shine a spotlight on Best Friends’ mission to put an end the euthanization of more than 9,000 dogs and cats in U.S. shelters each day.
