Celebrities Help at NKLA Adoption Weekend

The La Brea Tar Pits are famous for preserving remnants of a far distant past, but for two days in May the L.A. landmark was a site to celebrate the future as a record 472 companion animals found forever homes at the NKLA Adoption Weekend.

A number of doggedly devoted luminaries were on hand to shine a spotlight on adorable adoptables who hoped to land a starring role in the life of a pet parent:

RoboCop and Klondike star Abbie Cornish and her rescue Rovers India and Soleil came by to meet both the adoptable pets and canine icon Lassie:

Thirty Seconds to Mars guitarist Tomo Milicevic helped to amp up excitement for the paws cause when he took the stage with award-winning photographer Seth Casteel of Underwater Dogs fame to emcee a segment of the adopt-a-thon on May 4th:

Proving that trends may come and go, but compassion is always in fashion, model/TV personality Asha Leo and style blogger Sydne Summer were among the celebrity emcees. “Almost every day, I get stopped by someone wanting to know what breed my dog is. I smile and proudly say she’s a rescue,” Summer said. “I think it’s so important for people to know that there are incredible animals up for adoption, like my Pomeranian mix Bunny and her purebred Poodle friend Rosy. I’m just thrilled so many lovable animals found their forever homes this weekend.”

Animal advocate/Breaking Dawn: Part 2 star Marlane Barnes helped to celebrate the dawn of a new day for homeless pets in the L.A. area:

Teen actor/Kids Against Animal Cruelty founder Lou Wegner was among the caring celebrities to take on the role of emcee over the course of the weekend-loing event:

Held as part of Best Friends Animal Society’s NKLA (No-Kill Los Angeles) initiative, the free event included a variety of area rescue organizations and shelters, including Los Angeles Animal Services and Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in Mission Hills, as well as NKLA coalition partners such as Border Collies in Need, Boston Buddies, Inc., German Shepherd Rescue Los Angeles, Wags N Walks, Labs and Friends.org, Angel City Pit Bulls, Kitten Rescue and A Cat’s Tale.

“Everyone at Los Angeles Animal Services is thrilled that we were able to find homes for so many amazing shelter pets,” said Brenda Barnette, LAAS general manager. “Events like NKLA Adoption Weekend are great for
letting the community see what fantastic companion animals can be found in local shelters.”

“The sad truth is that 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every day. Best Friends Animal Society believes that number should bezero,” Marc Peralta, the Executive Director of Best Friends Animal Society- Los Angeles, said. “Watching the animal lovers of L.A. come together to put on the city’s biggest adoption event is truly incredible. It’s only by working together that we will Save Them All and turn LA into
NKLA.”
