Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall recently accepted a new title as she stepped into the role of patron of Medical Detection Dogs.
Receiving a royal welcome from the Duchess and Prince Charles upon their arrival at St. James’s Palace on March 11th, three Labrador Retrievers showed off their life-saving skill of detecting a number of serious illnesses, including cancer.
Among the attendees who marveled at the work of the specialist Spots was fellow Medical Detection Dogs patron Lesley Nicol, who is known to doggedly devoted fans of the period drama Downton Abbey as the Crawley family’s head cook, Mrs. Patmore. An ambassador for the organization since 2012, in honor of the star’s support a Poodle in training has been dubbed Patmore.

The proud pet parent of two rescued Rovers adopted from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the Duchess of Cornwall’s concern for our canine companions has also led her to become a patron of the Langford Trust for Animal Health and Welfare.
Established in 2008, Medical Detection Dogs is a registered charity which often turns to dogs in need of forever homes when searching for canines to train for the vital work of identifying volatile substances associated with cancer cells in screening samples, and detecting the odor changes which accompany certain medical crises. Adhering to the organization’s no kennel policy, the dogs work weekdays from 9 – 5, returning home each evening to loving foster families.
