Call the Midwife Star Helps Dogs in Bulgaria

As nurse Delia Busby on the popular British series Call the Midwife she’s helped to both save and bring lives into the world. Through her off-screen role as an animal advocate, actress Kate Lamb is helping to put Bulgarian street dogs on the road to a better life by hitting the road with her real life co-star — her recently adopted rescue dog.

Acting as patron of Street Hearts Bulgaria, earlier this year the TV star (and professional dog trainer!) worked with the dogs in the non-profit’s care. Her 13-year-old canine companion Willow having passed in late 2016, Lamb honored the memory of her late four-legged friend by deciding to open her heart and home to a dog who had been saved by the organization. She found her new pal with paws in an eight-month-old mixed breed dog she’s dubbed Scout.

Living rough at a Bulgarian train station before her rescue, on August 3rd Scout and her new pet parent embarked on a five-week, 2500 kilometer cycling adventure. While her new tail-wagging chum will travel in style inside a contraption affectionately known as ‘Bill the Burley Tail Wagon,’ Kate Lamb will pedal them both from the dog’s homeland of Bulgaria to Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Holland before reaching the UK and their ultimate destination of London, where Scout will meet her new four-legged sibling, a tabby cat named Bob.

The road home for the pair will be a fundraising effort to help Scout’s furry friends at Street Hearts BG who need forever homes. To follow their trek and make a donation, visit the cleverly named k8andk9.com, where the actress will document their trip towards their new life together in England.

Call the Midwife Cast Cares for Canines

Part of an ensemble cast that is doggedly devoted to helping animals in need, the tent that will shelter Kate Lamb and Scout on stops along the way was purchased with adventure vouchers from her co-stars in a show of support, the Tenby Observer reports.

The Call the Midwife cast includes several stars who have helped animal welfare charities, including:

  • Helen George, who portrays nurse Trixie Franklin. The proud pet parent to two rescue dogs, she is a long-time supporter of The Mayhew Animal Home.
  • Linda Bassett, who stars as nurse Phyllis Crane, adopted Dust– a senior canine from Romania who was injured and facing death from starvation before he was saved by Safe Dog Rescue. Bassett helped the non-profit raise funds for their paws cause by posing for the charity’s 2015 calendar in a photo which brought back memories of the star’s role in the hit comedy Calendar Girls
  • former cast member Pam Ferris (known to the show’s fans as Sister Evangelina) is an ambassador for Blue Cross. In 2017, the actress designed a limited edition charity tea towel featuring a drawing of her two canine companions Stan and Elsie to raise funds for, and awareness of, Blue Cross’ Paws for Tea event.
