Although photos in even (not mottled) shade are generally best, like the shade on cloudy days, there are good reasons to take photos in either sun or shade…but not BOTH.
Take, for example, the top photo. Tiki is in the sun and she’s nice and bright; her beautiful brown eyes are really highlighted by the sun. (OK, please just ignore the porch behind her…and the dogs’ cooling cot which they love on sunny winter afternoons.)
But see what happens when Tiki moves from sun into half sun, half shade…
Her face is lost in shadow and the whole photo is just uneven.
One minute later, I took this shot in complete shade…
Whether you select shade or sun, just pick ONE!
