Queen Camilla Celebrates Medical Detection Dogs

Although Queen Camilla has held that title since late 2022, she has held the title of royal patron to Medical Detection Dogs since 2014, and in that capacity Her Royal Majesty recently celebrated the charity’s crowning achievement…its 15th anniversary!

Hosting a reception for the charity at Clarence House, the Queen welcomed several Medical Detection Dogs ambassadors (including British perfumer Jo Malone), and some of the charity’s clients, trainers, clever canines who have gone on to become Medical Alert Assistance and Bio Detection Dogs, as well as dogs in training. Medical detection dogs can identify cancer, malaria, neurological diseases, bacterial diseases, COVID-19 and more.

Co-founded by Dr. Claire Guest OBE (whose breast cancer was discovered in 2009 thanks to the ability of a cancer dog), Medical Detection Dogs trains canines for the vital work of identifying volatile substances associated with cancer cells in screening samples, and detecting odor changes which can accompany a number of medical issues.  Since its start in 2008, Medical Detection Dogs has trained more than 200 canines.

The Queen’s Companion Animal-Themed Patronages

Along with being royal patron of Medical Detection Dogs, Queen Camilla acts as patron or president to more than 100 charitable organizations, including several which celebrate our furry friends.

As a proud pet parent to Beth and Bluebell, two rescue Jack Russell Terriers from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Camilla proved to be the perfect choice to take on the title of royal patron of the renowned animal welfare charity when Queen Elizabeth II relinquished the position in 2016 after 60 years of support.

Queen Camilla is also patron of The Royal Veterinary Animal Care Trust, (a position which was once held by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother), and in 2006 she took on the mantle of patron of the Langford Trust for Animal Health and Welfare.
