Summer of Love 2017: Celebrities Who Adopted Rescue Dogs

As we get ready to embark on the fall season, we thought we would take a look back at the well-known personalities who marked the 50th anniversary of the summer of love by offering a lifetime of love to a dog in need. If you know of any famous fans of our four-legged friends who adopted a barking buddy from a shelter or rescue in the summer of 2017, let us know!

As her on-screen husband Judd might say, pet homelessness “‘Taint right ,’taint fit, ‘taint fair, ‘taint proper!” This summer the actress who stars as Prudie in the popular historical British drama Poldark cast a Yorkshire Terrier in the real life role of her canine companion. Already a pet parent to a rescue dog named Billie from The Mayhew Animal Home, Beatie Edney turned once again to the London-based animal welfare charity to find her second pal with paws. Helping out the charity which helped to form her fur family, in July the actress and her two tail-wagging chums took part in The Mayhew Animal Home’s annual Hounds on the Heath fundraiser.

A star who has taken a stand in the struggle to end BSL, multi-Pit Bull pet parent Jon Bernthal once again welcomed the pitter patter of tiny Pittie feet at his house when he adopted Lil Bam Bam Bernthal. The former star of The Walking Dead told fans via Instagram: “Rescue a Pit Bull. They just may rescue you back. Big love.”

Following his rescue by Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE), a tiny mixed breed dog named Tory waited two years to find his forever home due to prejudice against dogs with dark coats. The pooch’s patience was finally rewarded, however, and today the adorable rover resides with the First Family of South Korea! An animal lover whose fur family includes a dog named Maru and Jjing-Jjing, a cat adopted from a shelter, Moon Jae-in plans to create in his country both feeding areas for stray cats and additional play areas for pet parents to take their dogs.

Entertainment icon Vicki Lawrence, who tickled TV viewers’ funny bones as the matriarch of Mama’s Family, is now a proud fur Mama to a Shih Tzu she adopted from Retrievers and Friends, a rescue in Menifee, California. Knowing that one way to honor the passing of a beloved dog is to offer a new lease on life to a dog in need, little Hannah was welcomed into the comedienne’s heart and home not long after Lawrence’s rescued Lab Molly crossed Rainbow Bridge.

Dubbed Nemo after the main character in the Jules Verne novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, a two-year-old black Lab/Griffon mix has turned the page to a new chapter in his life thanks to his pet parent, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. The new First Fido was united with his famous father thanks to La Societe Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) Refuge d’Hermeray.

Supermodel Stella Maxwell is also a role model for choosing the option of pet adoption! The Victoria’s Secret Angel and actress Kristen Stewart are the proud pet parents of a dog they have dubbed Trip, who was rescued in Van Nuys, California.

Tony Award-nominated actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who first rose to fame in the original cast of the Broadway hit Dreamgirls, has made one dog’s dream of finding a forever home come true. The star, who met the Maltese during a pet adoption segment of New York Live, adopted adorable Zora from Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center. The Huntington, New York-based non-profit, which saved the pup from facing her fate in a high-kill shelter, previously united seven-time Grammy Award winner Gloria Estefan with her Chihuahua/Maltese mix fur babies in 2016.

Thinking a lot about the option of pet adoption, “Think a Little Less” singer Michael Ray put a song in the collective hearts of his dog-loving fans when he announced that he had welcomed a rescue dog into his life. Blown away by the husky/shepherd he met during a Chicago concert stop at Country LakeShake Festival, the crooner/actor found the pup he dubbed Wrigley with help from PAWS Chicago.

They shared screen time on the ABC series Revenge, are now recently engaged twosome Emily Van Camp and Josh Bowman are sharing the responsibilities of pet parenting! The bride-to-be took to Instagram to tell fans about their new fur baby Frankie B. The lucky pup is one of over 450 dogs who have found forever families so far this year thanks to Wags & Walks, a L.A.-based non-profit which was founded in 2011.

Named after The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, tiny Elvis– who at one time was facing his fate in a kill shelter in Texas– has taken center stage in the lives of his new famous forever family. Already pet parents to a rescue pup named Paco, actress Olivia Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis found their new three-year-old fur baby at the no-kill Barc Shelter in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sharing the happy news with her fans, the Rush star stated: “He’s lived a pretty harrowing life so far, and we are so lucky he adopted us as his new family, so we can treat him like the king he was born to be.”
