Are Dogs Allowed in Walgreens?

Share with fellow dog lovers!

As the second-largest pharmacy store chain in the United States, Walgreens is a favorite with many both for prescriptions and for convenience items, photo needs and beauty products. But are dogs allowed in Walgreens with you on your shopping trip?

Are dogs allowed in Walgreens?

Dogs are not allowed in Walgreens. Similar to a convenience store like 7-Eleven which is regulated similar to a full-size grocery store due to the presence of food in the store, Walgreens cannot allow dogs in the stores due to the food aisles.

If you need to pick up from Walgreens and you’re out with your dog, see if your store has curbside pickup. Prescriptions can be picked up at the drive-through windows–and you can also order online at Walgreens.com for home delivery.

Can I bring a service dog in Walgreens?

Yes, a trained service dog that is required to assist you is allowed in any Walgreens store under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA explains, “Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets.”

Emotional support dogs do not have the same rights as service dogs. Also, therapy dogs are not service dogs.

Service dogs going to Walgreens do not need to wear a special service dog vest, harness or tag but store employees have the right to ask you two questions of your service dog:

  1. whether the service animal is required because the person has a disability
  2. what type of work or task the service animal is trained to perform

If your dog is not a trained service dog, do not try to misrepresent your dog as a service dog. Depending on where you live, misprepresenting your dog as a service dog can carry a fine of up to $1000.
