Apple Pie Dog Treat Recipe

apple-final

Every so often I make a dog treat recipe that smells so good I just want to stand and snack on it in the kitchen. (The liver training treats would not fall into that category.) This week I made Apple Pie Dog Treats and they smelled so good I not only had to sample them but I had to go back and make a few extra so we could have them (with vanilla ice cream) ourselves!

In honor of the Fourth of July, I wanted to make a little apple pie treat for the dogs that would be simple (and not filled with sugar like an apple pie recipe you’d normally find.) And it just so happened that this same week, in my haste buying groceries, I bought a package of flour tortillas (instead of the low-carb tortillas I usually buy for us.)

The solution to these unwanted tortillas? Use them to make very simple apple pie treats!

Ingredients

  • 6 large (burrito-size) flour tortillas (You can use any type or size tortillas you have on hand, though.)
  • 2 cups natural, unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon molasses (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter

Preparation is fast and easy. If you’ll be adding molasses to the applesauce, mix the two together and stir until blended. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Next, lay out the tortilla then spread on 2-3 tablespoons (depending on the size of the tortilla) of applesauce. Try not to get too much applesauce near the edges of the tortilla.

Roll the tortilla much like a jellyroll then put the tortilla, seam down, on a baking sheet.

When you’ve filled and rolled all the tortillas, pop the baking sheets in the oven for 20 minutes.

After 20 minutes, pull the baking sheets from the oven and flip the rolls; they should be lightly browned on the bottom. Apply butter to the top side of each tortilla.  (I just wiped each with a stick of butter but you can melt the butter and brush it on, too.) Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon.

Return the rolls to the oven for about five minutes. Remove from oven and allow the rolls to cool then slice them into bite-sized pieces (unless you want to save some back for your own dessert like I did!)

Wishing you all a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend! (And hoping that any of you who have firework-fearful dogs, like us, enjoy a quiet weekend with your dogs! We’re already planning a weekend of TV watching with the dogs…with the sound up just a little louder than usual!)
