Actress Miranda Richardson Joins Our Best Friends Campaign

Actress Miranda Richardson, who has fascinated film fans through her performances in such movies as Enchanted April, Sleepy Hollow and The Crying Game, has stepped into her real life role as an animal advocate to ask for an end to experiments on dogs and cats in the UK.

Following in the footsteps of of fellow famous friends of those with paws as Ricky Gervais, TV host Paul O’Grady and former Pussycat Dolls member Kimberly Wyatt, the star has shown her support for the BUAV’s Our Best Friends campaign, which is shining a spotlight on heartbreaking statistics– that 3,214 dogs and 202 cats were used in laboratory experiments conducted in Great Britain in 2012.

Speaking out about the Our Best Friends petition, Miranda Richardson (who, in the past, has also used her star status to illuminate WSPA International and The Blue Paw Trust’s efforts to help stray dogs in Sri Lanka) stated: “Millions of families in the UK share their home with a dog or cat. They enrich our lives and bring us so much happiness. It is, therefore, unacceptable to me that in this day and age cats and dogs are still being tested on in UK laboratories. Please join me and sign the BUAV’s petition to call on the Government to end these cruel and outdated tests once and for all.”

Our Best Friends is a campaign launched by BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection), which has spent the last century striving to save the lives of animals used in testing. Other current BUAV campaigns include No Cruel Cosmetics, the Clean Up Cruelty campaign calling for a ban on animal tests of household cleaning products and the REPLACE campaign, which requests that labs use alternative methods to animal testing.
