People with a passion for compassion can help the public picture the day when the cruelty of dog fighting comes to an end by sharing word of National Dog Fighting Awareness Day.
ASPCA’s annual National Dog Fighting Awareness Day campaign takes place every year on April 8th.
Sir Patrick Stewart Supports National Dog Fighting Awareness Day Efforts
The star of the iconic sci-fi series Star Trek: The Next Generation is urging this generation to engage in the struggle to end dog fighting by taking part in the ASPCA’s annual National Dog Fighting Awareness Day campaign, which takes place on April 8th.
An English actor known by TV viewers as Captain Jen-Luc Picard and by film fans as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, Sir Patrick Stewart recently acted as a foster pet parent to Ginger, a Pit Bull from Wags and Walks rescue in Los Angeles.
The real life role opened the star’s eyes to the true beauty of Pit Bull-type dogs, and the need to protect our four-legged friends who are often hounded by the public’s prejudice through BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) and put in danger of injury and death through the illegal and inhumane practice of dog fighting.
“No civilized society should tolerate barbaric practices that profit off animal torture, yet this is exactly what happens at dog fights– which occur more frequently, take place in more communities, and involve a broader population of individuals than most people realize,” Stewart stated.
“Dog fighting represents the worst of human nature and the ultimate betrayal of loving animals, so it’s important to build awareness and a resounding public rejection. I proudly stand with the ASPCA’s #GetTough campaign because it’s an active step toward the ultimate eradication of this heinous ‘blood sport.'”

Professional Wrestler A J Lee Works to #GetTouch on Dog Fighting
Animal lovers are also encouraged to visit aspca.org/gettough to sign a pledge and learn more about the plight of dogs who are forced to fight, from the use of steroids to increase both muscle mass and aggressiveness; the mutilation of their bodies in order to limit the area where the dog’s opponent can grab hold, to the fate that may await a dog for whom losing a fight could mean losing their life.
Three-time WWE Divas Champion A J Lee is also a champion of paws causes. On April 8th animal lovers can join the professional wrestler in the fight to defeat animal cruelty as she partners with the ASPCA to promote National Dog Fighting Awareness Day.
Lee’s passion for compassion was nurtured from an early age thanks to a kind-hearted father who offered care to any furry friend in need, among them former fighting dogs.
Mugsy, a Pit Bull puppy who was born into the world of dog fighting, found his way into her family’s heart and home, and her dogged devotion to canines in need is a touching tribute to her 16-year friendship with her four-pawed pal.
Today the Wrestlemania 31 winner (who is a proud pet parent to two rescue dogs) is using her star wattage to shine a light on the plight of dogs who are forced into battle with each other, and animal lovers everywhere can follow in her footsteps by:
- Signing an ASPCA petition encouraging the U.S. Department of Justice to continue to fight the good fight to end this barbaric practice.
- Downloading the ASPCA’s free digital #GetTough toolkit, complete with material which packs a powerful emotional punch, including a micro-poster, profile photos and cards to share the message via social media.
- Striking a pose with the ASPCA’s printable poster to share on social media with the hashtag #GetTough.
