As all fans of felines know, a virtual clowder of cat cafes have made their mark in American popular culture in recent years. Now devotees of dogs are have having their day thanks to a venue that has found new meaning in the word ‘cafe’–Connect. Adopt. Fundraise. Educate.
Canines have previously found forever homes thanks to The Jacksonville Dog Cafe’s previous pop-up events, and now the tiny nonprofit has found a forever home of its own at 5535 Roosevelt Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida. On February 11th, the city of Jacksonville received an early Valentine’s gift as the cafe officially opened, with the spot offering a unique Saturday getaway for area animal lovers.
Coffee and Canines
Along with sipping on beverages (including tea and cups of java from Martin’s Coffee) and chowing down on barbecue, attendees can also feast their eyes on adorable adoptables from an array of area rescue organizations, including Camp Critter, Heroes & Hounds, The Old Dog House and Dachshund Adoption Rescue and Education (DARE).
Special Events
If making new furry friends wasn’t enough, the dog cafe will also hold special events to promote the paws cause, such as a visit from a pet portraitist and the chance to drink a toast to our tail-wagging chums at a wine event.
Second Dog Cafe in the United States
While cat cafes have already made themselves at home in The Sunshine State, with both The Orlando Cat Cafe and the The Good Luck Cat Cafe in Wilton Manors opening in 2016, visiting a dog cafe is close to a one-of-a-kind canine experience, as the only other dog cafe in the United States seems to be The Dog Cafe, an aptly-named Fido-centric facility in Los Angeles which made its debut in April 2016.
The Jacksonville Dog Cafe is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
