First Dog Cafe in America Opens

Los Angeles is known as The City of Dreams, and this April the dream of America’s first dog cafe opening its doors transformed from reverie to reality as The Dog Cafe welcomed its first canine-loving customers.

While there is already a virtual clowder of cat cafes from coast to coast (starting with America’s first feline-themed facility Cat Town Cafe in Oakland, California, which welcomed its first customers in 2014), The Dog Cafe is marking new territory in the world of pet adoption by showcasing Spots who have been overlooked by potential pet parents time and again and who were in danger of facing their fate in L.A.’s shelter system.

At the cafe patrons can sip tea, lemonade or cups of coffee from Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. or Dogs Drink Coffee (both of which give a portion of proceeds to help animals in need). Although the menu does not include food, visitors can feast their eyes on the sweet sight of shelter dogs (who are currently in foster care) as they enjoy a taste of the good life. For a $10 fee customers can visit the cafe’s special canine quarters for fifty-five minutes, making some new four-legged friends– and possibly finding a new furry family member– among Rovers who represent all breeds and ages. (Customers may also be fortunate enough to meet Sharkie, the Fido whose face graces The Dog Cafe’s logo! Sharkie is the cafe owner’s own canine companion.)

Located at 240 North Virgil Avenue in Los Angeles, The Dog Cafe is open Tuesday – Sunday. Due to the cafe’s popularity, reservations are recommended.

NOTE: Little ones must be over the age of five to gain entry to the cafe. Children between the ages of five and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
