Soon to reprise her role as Mary Watson in the much-anticipated Sherlock holiday special, Amanda Abbington steps into her real life role as a high-profile pal to those with paws for a new Dogs Trust PSA in order to shine a light on a case we call The Mystery of the Inexplicable Excuses.
The actress is one of many animal-loving luminaries in Dogs Trust’s annual “A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas” campaign who read some of the ridiculous reasons given by the public to the staff at Dogs Trust over the past 12 months when relinquishing a faithful four-legged friend to the charitable organization.
In the video Fido-loving Anglophiles will also recognize Mel Giedroyc from The Great British Baking Show, who stated that “As a dog lover, to hear some of the downright bonkers reasons why people give up their dogs shocks and saddens me. Hopefully this video will highlight how important responsible dog ownership is.”
A proud pet parent to a long-haired Dachshund named Arthur, Amanda Abbington and her canine companion previously helped Dogs Trust by participating in The Company of Dogs exhibition and auction to raise both awareness and funds for the paws cause.
Over the years the slogan “A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas” has become as much a part of the holiday season in the UK as Christmas crackers, pantomimes and the Queen’s Christmas message. The phrase was launched in 1978 by Dogs Trust, an animal welfare charity which was founded in 1891. Last year alone Dogs Trust cared for 16,731 homeless dogs at 20 rehoming centers.
