Treating Shelter Dogs This Season with #AlpoDogBiscuit

I was afforded this opportunity because I am part of the BlogPaws Professional Blogger Network. The Alpo dog biscuits were provided by Nestlé Purina. DogTipper only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. The opinions in this post are my own.

Are you looking for an inexpensive donation to your local shelter this holiday season? It’s easy to play Santa with the new ALPO® Wholesome Biscuits, available at your local grocery store. This economical treat is available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, perfect for meeting the many sizes of dogs found in every shelter. Each treat contains 23 vitamins and minerals and calcium to help support strong teeth and bones.

But treats for shelter dogs contain so much more: they also contain hope. Hope that a treat from a kind hand will begin to calm a frightened dog. Hope that a few minutes spent chewing a biscuit will help relax an anxious dog.  Hope that a calm, relaxed state will attract a forever family.

When we adopted Irie from a very small, country shelter, they had no treats. We visited her and took her on a walk but it would have been so nice to have also offered her a treat. Not only would it have helped show Irie that we were to be trusted, but it would have also been educational for us. We’d have seen how she reacted to food, being able to note any potential resource guarding issues that could be a make or break factor for some adopters, depending on the family makeup.

Treats are also a great tool for dogs spending hour after hour in their shelter kennel. Tiki was hospitalized for a month on her arrival at our local shelter before she was available for adoption. We hope that she had treats to help break up the monotony of time in the sterile environment of the shelter clinic.

But many shelters don’t have treats. It’s very easy this holiday season to pick up a bag of ALPO Wholesome Biscuits at your local grocery store. Purina sent me a bag for review with our dogs but, on my next stop at Walmart, I tossed another bag into my basket.

Tomorrow we’re headed to our local shelter, where we adopted Tiki and our cat Inca, to leave off a donation box of toys, dog coats, and treats. We’ll be including ALPO Wholesome Biscuits to brighten a dog’s day this holiday season!
