On the ice they may be accustomed to the sound of a cheering crowd, but when the Calgary Flames recently walked into Bowdog Canine Specialists the players were greeted by appreciative barks from fans of the four-legged variety as they gave an assist to dogs who are hoping to score a spot in a forever home.
Created by Flames Right Wing Brian McGrattan and his wife Michelle, the Fur Babies fundraiser celebrated its second year with fans of sports and Spots meeting members of the NHL team and their significant others, their barking buddies, and even the Flames’ Fido-inspired mascot Harvey the Hound during a day of play for a higher purpose which included a dog fashion show, activities for little ones and lots of adorable adoptables.
Among the 18 players who got in the game to help the paws cause were Mikael Backlund, with his two tail-wagging chums, Dexter and Lily; T.J. Brodie and his pup, Gunner; Johnny Gaudreau; Josh Jooris; Karrie Ramo and his four-pawed pal, Arthur; Devin Setoguchi and his furry friend, Sake; Ladislav Smid and his pretty pup, Jasmine; Matt Stajan and his canine companion, Lola; and Dennis Wideman and the members of his fur family, Maverick and Nahla.
The second annual Fur Babies event raised a total of $3,430 for the Alberta Animal Rescue Crews Society (AARCS), a non-profit animal welfare organization founded in 2006 which rescues homeless dogs and cats found in Alberta’s rural communities.
