El Paso Chihuahuas Adopt Rescue Dog

Chihuahua1When the El Paso Chihuahuas stepped out on to the playing field at Southwest University Park on August 3, 2014 for their second Bark at the Park of the season fans had the chance to cheer for the home team who has given a forever home to a dog in need.

Partnering with the Humane Society of El Paso, the minor league team went on a months long search for a pup who could be an ambassador who could pitch the option of pet adoption and the need for responsible pet guardianship. The players found their new four-legged team member in a one-year-old Chihuahua who once lived on the streets and in the city shelter, but who now lives in the spotlight.

“She’ll serve as a reminder to our community about the thousands of animals left behind every year,” stated Kandolite Flores, the Associate Director of the Humane Society of El Paso, who discovered the tiny tail-wagger at Animal Services five days after the dog had entered into the shelter system and transported her to the no-kill non-profit organization’s facility. “The Humane Society is happy to be working with the Chihuahuas and thankful for their help with promoting and advocating for pets in our community.”

Dubbed Lola by doggedly devoted baseball buffs who paid a $1 donation to The Humane Society of El Paso for each vote in a contest to choose a moniker for Chico the mascot’s new barking buddy, the pretty pup made her debut during Bark at the Park, with the Chihuahuas donning special dog-themed jerseys to raise even more awareness of, and funds for, the paws cause.
