Birthdays are traditionally a time to receive gifts, but when Billy Joel celebrated the start of his 65th year with a performance at Madison Square Garden it was the singer who offered a present– that of a better future to dogs and cats in need.
The Piano Man’s doggedly devoted fans were tickled pink when Howard Stern announced in March that the entertainer would tickle the ivories to help Bianca’s Furry Friends, a proposed 14,000 square foot, cage free Feline Adoption and Wellness Center which will be located on the second floor of North Shore Animal League America’s adoption headquarters. (Bianca’s Furry Friends is named in remembrance of Howard and Beth Stern’s beloved English Bulldog, who passed away in 2012.)
Once built, the center– which, although feline-focused, will also help dogs and puppies– will include a a cat behavior department, exam rooms, a surgical suite and recovery room, around the clock care for kittens in the nursery, and a kitten adoption facility.
Outside the concert venue attendees also had a song in their hearts thanks to a presentation of adorable adoptables from North Shore Animal League America.
Billy Joel sings the praises of the world’s largest animal rescue and adoption organization, as he adopted his canine companion, Rosie– a pug who had been saved from life in a puppy mill– from North Shore Animal League America in 2012.
