We have a new toy.
This is our new infrared game camera.
As you know, we live in the country in a very wild area that’s pretty much surrounded by a preserve. We have a lot of wildlife out here including foxes, deer, armadillos, lots of rabbits, opossums, wild turkey, raccoons, and (new in the past 10 years) coyotes.
We don’t see the coyotes very often, although we see evidence (droppings) on our trails during all our walks. We hear them howling every few nights, especially during this very active time of year for them.
So we decided to get a game camera to see what was going on at night. We placed the camera just outside our fenced front yard for now although we might be moving it around to see where we can get the best photos. There’s no food source here for them, no compost pile or dog food (the dogs are always fed in the house), but we know they come close to the house and yard as they make their way to water in the creek…so we thought we might be able to get some photos.
So far, we’ve only gotten a few photos (other than ones of us walking the dogs as we go past the camera). Let’s just say Animal Planet and Nat Geo aren’t going to be calling us for photos, but we’re going to keep trying! Here’s our first shot of a coyote (or a deer?), walking by a picnic table we dismantled to refinish:
…and this quick shot of either a coyote or a fox heading away…
…and this bunny looking for a snack…
One fun thing about the game camera is that it shows the phase of the moon, the temperature, and the time the photo was taken.
Watch for more photos of our wildlife as we get more photos from Coyote Cam!
