Last spring, we wrote about discovering the FURminator for our dogs. Well, this spring it’s our cats’ turn….not just at a FURminator of their own but also for a site of their own. This month, in recognition of National Hairball Awareness Day, we’ve been using the FURminator deShedding Tool for Cats and gathering cat hair…lots of cat hair…and writing about it on our new site, CatTipper.com.
To help draw attention to the problem of hairballs (not just a housecleaning problem for cat lovers but a potential health problem for cats themselves), Caroline from RomeoTheCat.com challenged a group of bloggers to create hair creatures from cat hair collected using the FURminator deShedding Tool. (With four cats in our house, the challenge wasn’t so much choosing one creature to create with our hair collection…but to reign in the urge to make a whole cast of characters…)
But, thanks to watching a Harry Potter rerun one night with Irie, Tiki, Felix, Linus, Inca, and Coco, we settled on creating (or trying to create) our own “Hairy Potter” from our collection of cat hair. As we collected the hair, we began sorting it into two piles: light (Coco and Linus) and dark (Felix and Inca.) This was our collection after our first day of using the FURminator deShedding Tool for Cats:
Neither of us is particularly craftsy but we did hit upon the idea of using some spray glue which really made Hairy Potter possible. Like making a snowman of hair, a few rolls and Hairy’s body and head began taking shape. A few glue sprays and he was sticky enough to work with, and soon the dark fur was applied for a cape and hair. (It wasn’t maneuvered too much after that first glue application…we were worried about getting glue on our hands and looking like werewolves ourselves…)
We had great fun making “Hairy Potter” and now he resides atop a bookcase in Paris’ office. During the month we’ve been using the FURminator deShedding Tool for Cats we’ve found ONE hairball in the house. That just might be a record for us.
Now we need to think of something to make with all the dog hair we harvest with the FURminator. We’re thinking a whole village of yard gnomes…or some reindeer and snowmen for next Christmas…
Disclosure: We received a complimentary FURminator deShedding Tool for Cats from the manufacturer for our review but we had one; we’ve used our review FURminator for a giveaway. We were not paid for our review and all statements are strictly our own.
