Auburn Leathercrafters Rolled Leather Martingale Collar Review

Are you looking for a martingale collar that won’t snag on your dog’s fur? The answer may very well be a rolled martingale collar. We’ve recently started using a rolled leather martingale from Auburn Leathercrafters. Let’s look at the benefits of a martingale collar, especially a leather one, and if it might be right for your dog.

What is a Martingale Collar?

A martingale dog collar is a type of collar that is designed to provide more control over a dog’s head and neck than a traditional collar.

The collar consists of two loops, one that goes around the dog’s neck and another that tightens when the leash is pulled. This tightening action helps prevent the collar from slipping off the dog’s head, while also discouraging the dog from pulling or lunging forward.

Martingale collars are often used for dogs with narrow heads, such as greyhounds and whippets, as well as for dogs that tend to back out of their collars.

Like a choke collar, they prevent your dog from backing out of the collar and escaping; unlike a choke collar, they don’t choke your dog because the opening only restricts enough to prevent the collar from going over your dog’s head, not enough to put pressure on his throat and choke him.

If you’re using a choke collar, we really suggest a martingale collar…your dog will thank you!

Why Use a Rolled Collar

A rolled leather collar is designed for long-haired dogs so it won’t tangle when you’re removing it.

Rolled dog collars are designed to protect your dog’s fur and skin from damage and irritation that can be caused by traditional flat collars. The main benefit of a rolled dog collar is that it reduces the amount of friction and rubbing against your dog’s neck, which can cause matting, tangling, and even hair loss.

Rolled collars are particularly useful for dogs with long or thick coats, as these breeds are more prone to fur damage and matting.

Another benefit of rolled dog collars is that they are generally more comfortable for your dog to wear. The rounded shape of the collar conforms to the natural shape of your dog’s neck, reducing pressure points and ensuring a more secure fit. This can help prevent your dog from slipping out of their collar, which is especially important for dogs that are prone to escaping or pulling on their leash.

Auburn Leathercrafters Martingale

This collar is manufactured by Auburn Leathercrafters using bridle leather so it’s very heavy-duty (an important feature with our 60- and 72-pound girls).

The chain is genuine German Sprenger chain, a name well-known for top quality chains.

And here’s a look at the collar on our Irie. (We’ll probably be using the collar on Tiki, who has much longer hair, but it photographs much better on short-haired Irie!)

The collar is available in tan, burgundy, and black (seen here).

What Collar Size Should I Order?

Sizes run from 16-28 inches (remember to order the collar two inches larger than your dog’s neck size.)

The collar is only available in even number sizes so, if your size isn’t available, order the next size smaller, assuming the collar will stretch with use.

Whenever you use a martingale collar, leave it on only when you’re walking your dog; it’s not an everyday collar. (There’s the danger of the collar getting snagged when your dog’s not supervised.)

We have a second collar with our dogs’ tags on them that they wear around the clock. We use the martingale only when going on a walk…so they know as soon as they hear the jingle of that chain that it’s time for a walk!!

We love this new collar and look forward to many walks with it…a big paws up!

You’ll find the collar on the Auburn Leathercrafters website as well as on Amazon. (They also sell regular rolled collars in many colors as well as rolled leather leashes.)

2023 Update: It has been 13 years since we originally published this article on the Auburn Leathercraft martingale–and we STILL have this collar! Irie used it throughout her lifetime, and now we’re waiting for our puppy Isla to finish growing and inherit Irie’s collar. It looks as good as it always did!
