100*365: Putting the Foreground in Focus

Today I shot some photos with my cell phone of the dogs playing in the creek. Holding the leashes in one hand and the phone in the other (without dropping it in the water!), is tricky so I didn’t take as much care with focusing as I should have. My first shot was this…

The waterfall is in focus…but Irie’s not in sharp focus.

I reshot and put Irie in focus (the top photo), with Irie in sharp focus and the background falling into soft focus.

Neither is really right or wrong…but viewers expect to see what’s closest to them in focus. It’s a little unsettling for the foreground to be out of focus and the background in sharp focus.
