Katherine Heigl Adopts Two Rescue Puppies

After the loss of a cherished canine family member, many dog devotees find that the best way to honor the life of a late four-legged friend is to offer a new start in life to an orphaned animal. In remembrance of her beloved rescue Rover Mojo, who crossed Rainbow Bridge in October, actress Katherine Heigl has announced that she and husband Josh Kelley have just welcomed two three-month-old Shepherd mix puppies into their hearts and home.

The avid animal welfare advocate who– along with her mother Nancy– co-founded the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation in 2008 to rescue, rehabilitate and educate the public about the plight of homeless pets– found her two new fur babies at Coastal German Shepherd Rescue, a Southern California non-profit which saves abandoned members of the breed as well as many mixed breed dogs.

Although the star of the upcoming romantic comedy New Year’s Eve is partial to the name Flora Mae for the family’s new doggie daughter and husband Josh Kelley favors UNO as the name for their new barking boy, the stars are still mulling over the perfect monikers for their canine kids, with Katherine Heigl taking suggestions from fans via Twitter.

While the actress is currently enjoying the first days together with the new additions to her fur family, she is also spreading the word about her organization’s Pets for Patriots promotion. Partnering with the Los Angeles Animal Alliance’s Fall 5000 campaign, which hopes to find forever homes for 5,000 Southern California shelter animals during the month of November, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation’s Pets for Patriots promotion will provide no-cost adoptions for veterans. The campaign kicks off on November 4, 2011.
